Uttaranchal became the 27th state of the Indian union on 9th November 2000 when the Centre passed a bill for separate status of a state for Uttaranchal. The demand for a separate state had started in the early 1930s. Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India had stated that people of this region had special rights to take their decision under special circumstances.
The human movement in the region enhanced during early 1970s when a new political party namely “Uttarakhand Kranti Dal” was created. The struggle came to an end on 9th November 2000 when Uttaranchal was conferred a separate status of a state. Uttaranchal consists of 14 districts coming under two divisions – Garhwal and Kumaon.
