Uttaranchal nourishes a diverse and affluent culture and monuments of historical significance. The state is blessed with so much beauty and spiritual ecstasy that it is referred to as “Dev Bhoomi” - the Land of Gods. Two pristine rivers – Ganga and Yamuna originate from this land and flow through the mountainous terrain of the state entering Delhi and Uttar Pradesh thereafter. Among them, Ganga is the most holy and prominent as she represents a living deity, the soul of India - her rich culture, history and civilization. In Sanskrit the name 'Himalaya' means Abode of Snow, truly characterizing the vast permanent snow fields above the snow line.
The culture of Uttaranchal is incredibly old, dating back to pre-historic period. With the passage of time, it has taken a new shape retaining the same past grandeur. The most vital part of Uttaranchal culture is the people’s reverence for Nature and the celebration of life with peace and mutual respect. Uttaranchal’s age old traditions and customs are mentioned in the Kedar Khand or the Skanda Puran. The regions’ art, crafts, dance and music remain the same as earlier retaining its old tradition.
The culture of Uttaranchal finds manifestation in the lifestyle of its people. People irrespective of caste, creed and religion celebrate all festivals with great fervour. The Garhwal and Kumaon regions are dotted with places of religious importance. On auspicious occasions people gather at these places to celebrate the festivals with deep faith. This expression of joy and happiness not only reflects the rich culture of Uttaranchal but also provides insight into their way of living and celebration of lives. |
